Trans and GNC Services

The I Am Human Foundation was founded by a Black trans man, and trans community is at the center of everything we do. Our dedicated Trans and Gender Nonconforming Services focus area offers direct services, community building, and advocacy work that supports trans and gender nonconforming people across the South and beyond.

We do this work because we are this work. The people leading the program live the realities they are working to change. We do not approach trans community as a population to serve from the outside. We are the community, and our programs are built from inside that knowing.

The programs below address health, identity documents, community, housing, and the practical realities of moving through a world that has not made room for us. Together they form a continuum of care that meets trans and GNC community members wherever they are on their journey.

Our Trans and GNC Programs

  • Trans Connect — Our monthly community support group, where trans men, trans women, and gender nonconforming community members come together for honest conversation, peer support, and connection. Open to community members of all ages, races, and gender identities.
  • Name and Gender Marker Navigation — Help navigating the legal process to update name and gender markers on government documents, including driver’s licenses, birth certificates, Social Security records, and passports. We walk you through paperwork, court dates, and what to expect.
  • Affirming Healthcare Navigation — Connection to medical providers who will treat trans community members with respect, including providers offering hormone therapy, surgical referrals, and primary care. We know which providers are actually affirming versus which ones say they are.
  • Hormone Safety Education — Plain-language education on the risks of unprescribed hormones and silicone injections, with a clear path to safer alternatives through prescribed care. We meet people where they are without judgment, and we help them get to safer choices when they are ready.
  • Trans Housing Support — Navigation, resources, and crisis support for trans community members experiencing housing instability or housing discrimination. Includes connection to trans-friendly housing programs and emergency support.
  • Trans Veterans Support — Specialized support for trans veterans navigating VA benefits, post-service career transitions, and the unique challenges of rebuilding life after military service. Includes peer connection with other trans veterans and navigation of VA care.
  • Trans Reentry Support — Specialized reentry support for trans community members returning home from incarceration, including help re-establishing identity documents, accessing affirming care, and navigating the particular dangers trans people face during reentry.
  • Trans Youth Mentorship — Pairing trans and gender nonconforming youth with trans adult mentors who can walk alongside them through identity, family, school, and the questions only someone who has been there can answer.
  • Trans-Led Wellness Programming — Wellness events designed by and for trans community members, including healing arts, movement work, and community gatherings that center trans joy alongside trans survival.
  • Crisis Response — Direct support for trans community members experiencing crisis, with warm handoffs to trusted partners for situations beyond our scope. We do not refer and disappear. We stay engaged.

Who We Serve

Trans and gender nonconforming community members of all races, ages, and experiences, with priority outreach to Black and brown trans people, trans elders, trans youth navigating family rejection, trans veterans, and trans community members impacted by incarceration, housing instability, or violence. Our programs are open to anyone who identifies under the trans and gender nonconforming umbrella, regardless of where they are on their journey.

Why This Work

Black and brown trans people are still losing their lives to violence, neglect, and a system that pretends not to see us. Trans community members are still navigating documents that do not match who they are, providers who misgender them, and services that were not built with us in mind. We refuse to wait for someone else to make this right. The Trans and GNC Services focus area is how we show up, year after year, with care that does not require anyone to prove they are worthy of receiving it.
