Privacy Policy
Effective Date: May 15, 2026 Last Updated: May 15, 2026
The I Am Human Foundation respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you visit our website at iamhumanfoundation.org, donate, sign up for our newsletter, or otherwise engage with us online.
We serve Black and brown LGBTQ+ communities, including people living with HIV, trans and gender nonconforming individuals, youth, and others who often face heightened privacy risks. We take that responsibility seriously, and this policy reflects our commitment to handling your information with care.
Who We Are
The I Am Human Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with a satellite office in San Francisco, California. You can reach us at info@iamhumanfoundation.org or 678-365-9912.
Information We Collect
When you use our website or interact with our programs, we may collect the following types of information.
Information you give us directly. This includes your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and any message or comment you submit through our Contact Us form, volunteer application, newsletter signup, or program inquiry. If you donate, we also collect billing information needed to process your gift.
Information collected automatically. When you visit our website, we automatically collect basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you visit, and the date and time of your visit. This helps us understand how visitors use the site and improve their experience.
Cookies and similar technologies. Our website uses cookies, which are small text files stored on your device. Cookies help us remember your preferences, measure site performance, and improve content. You can adjust your browser settings to refuse cookies, though some parts of the site may not work as intended if you do.
Donor information. When you donate through our website, your payment information is collected and processed by our secure third-party payment processor (Stripe). We do not store your full credit or debit card number on our servers. We do retain a record of your donation, including your name, contact information, and donation amount, for accounting, tax reporting, and donor stewardship purposes.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Respond to your inquiries, applications, and requests
- Process donations and send tax receipts
- Send newsletters, event invitations, and program updates if you have subscribed
- Improve our website, programs, and services
- Comply with legal, regulatory, and reporting requirements
We only use your information for the purposes described in this policy or for purposes you specifically consent to.
How We Protect Sensitive Information
We understand that the communities we serve often face risks tied to identity, health status, and visibility. We treat information shared by our communities with extra care.
- We do not share your identity, gender history, HIV status, immigration status, or other sensitive personal information with funders, government agencies, media, or third parties without your explicit consent or unless required by law.
- Information collected through our direct service programs (such as HIV navigation, cancer screening navigation, peer support, or wellness services) is governed by separate program-specific consent forms and is not combined with website analytics or marketing data.
- Our staff and volunteers are trained on confidentiality, harm reduction, and trauma-informed practice.
Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. The only situations in which we share your information are:
Service providers. We work with trusted vendors who help us operate our website, send emails, process donations, and manage our database. These include MailChimp (email marketing), Stripe (payment processing), Google (analytics and workspace tools), and our website hosting provider. These vendors are contractually required to protect your information and use it only for the services they provide to us.
Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or government request, or if we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to protect the safety of our staff, participants, or the public.
Organizational changes. If the foundation merges, dissolves, or transfers operations to another nonprofit, your information may be transferred as part of that process. We will notify you if this happens.
Your Rights and Choices
You have rights regarding your personal information, including:
- Access: You can ask what personal information we have about you.
- Correction: You can ask us to fix information that is inaccurate or out of date.
- Deletion: You can ask us to delete your information, subject to legal and accounting requirements that may require us to retain donation records.
- Opt-out: You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us directly.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@iamhumanfoundation.org. We will respond within 30 days.
Residents of California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have additional rights under those laws, including the right to know what categories of information we collect and to request that we limit certain uses. We honor these rights regardless of where you live.
Privacy of Minors
Our website is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will delete that information promptly.
Some of our programs serve youth ages 13 and older. Information collected through these programs is handled under separate consent procedures designed for young people, in partnership with parents, guardians, or other trusted adults where appropriate.
Data Retention
We keep your information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy. Donation records are retained for a minimum of seven years to meet IRS and accounting requirements. Newsletter and contact information is retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.
Security
We use reasonable physical, electronic, and administrative safeguards to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, or disclosure. No system is completely secure, but we work to minimize risk and respond quickly if a problem occurs.
Third-Party Links
Our website may include links to other sites operated by partners, funders, or news outlets. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to read their privacy policies before sharing your information.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the Last Updated date at the top of this page. If we make significant changes, we will provide notice through our website or by email. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
