Where our communities turn power into protection

Civic Engagement

The right to vote was never given freely to the communities we serve. Every expansion of the ballot for Black, brown, queer, and trans people came from organized struggle, and every rollback is a reminder that what was won can be taken. The I Am Human Foundation runs nonpartisan voter registration, civic education, and policy advocacy programming because the policies that govern our lives are decided by people in office, and our communities deserve a real say in who those people are and what they do.

We do not tell anyone how to vote. We tell people what is on the ballot, what their rights are, where to go, and how the system works. Then we trust our community to decide for themselves, the way they always have.

Our Civic Engagement Programs

  • Voter Registration Drives — Nonpartisan voter registration at community events, Pride gatherings, partner sites, and our own office. We register eligible voters and follow up to make sure they receive their voter information.
  • Voter ID Navigation — Help obtaining or updating identification documents needed to vote. Includes navigating name and gender marker updates on IDs so trans voters are not turned away at the polls.
  • Voter Education — Plain-language information on what is on the ballot, including local races that often shape daily life more than national headlines suggest. We cover candidates, ballot measures, judicial elections, school board races, and other contests that get less attention but matter most.
  • Early Voting and Absentee Voting Support — Information on early voting windows, absentee voting eligibility, vote-by-mail procedures, and ballot tracking. We help community members vote in the way that works best for their schedules and circumstances.
  • Rides to the Polls — Free transportation to polling locations during early voting and on election day. We coordinate volunteer drivers and ensure no community member misses voting because they cannot get there.
  • Know Your Rights Training — Training for voters who have faced or may face intimidation, wrongful turnaway, or other violations at the polls. We teach community members what their rights are at the polling place and how to respond if those rights are violated.
  • Returning Citizens Voting Support — Specialized support for community members returning from incarceration whose voting rights have been restored. We help with re-registration, address questions about eligibility, and provide accurate information in a landscape where misinformation is common.
  • Civic Education Workshops — Community workshops on how government works, how decisions are made, who has power, and how community members can engage between elections. Designed for people who have been told their voice does not matter and who deserve practical tools to make their voices heard.
  • Policy Advocacy Updates — Plain-language updates on legislation and policies affecting our communities, with calls to action for community members who want to engage their elected officials directly.

Who We Serve

Eligible voters from communities of color, with priority outreach to first-time voters, voters returning from incarceration whose rights have been restored, trans and gender nonconforming voters whose identification documents do not yet match their name or gender, and community members who have been disengaged from electoral politics and want a way back in. Our programs are nonpartisan and open to community members across the political spectrum.

Our Commitment

We do not tell anyone how to vote. We tell people what is on the ballot, what their rights are, and where to go. We trust our community to decide for themselves, the way they always have. We also commit to staying engaged between elections, because civic engagement is not a once-every-four-years activity. It is a year-round practice of paying attention, asking hard questions, and holding the people in power accountable for the choices they make.

How to Connect

To volunteer as a voter registrar, request a registration drive at your event, sign up for rides to the polls, or join our civic education community, email info@iamhumanfoundation.org and reference civic engagement. For information on voter registration deadlines in Georgia, California, or other states where we have a presence, ask and we will share the most current information.
